Guitar Right Hand Tapping

This technique was introduced and was known to mankind in a mind – bursting kind – of – way by Eddie Van Halen of the band “Van Halen” back in the late 70’s. Guitar players all over the world who witnessed this phenomenon was converted to this religion and their paradigms shattered. He did it on their first – album, on the song “Eruption”. By the way, the song itself is just a petty excuse to make way for the greatness and massive epicness of guitar god Eddie to manifest his guitar glory to the world; and it did; and it surpassed expectations; and it became the blueprint for almost all solos to come.

Guitar Right Hand Tapping – How to do it?

You can be as epic as Van Halen, but not a hundred percent though since he’s the first guy to do it, but you can do it too. With a lot of practice and determination, you can do the exact technique that he popularized back in the 70’s. Here’s how to do it.

Mastering your music

Posted by – November 9, 2010

Why is it important to master your songs? Why should we even pay for someone to master it? These might be the questions that go around your head all day. The answer to this question is simple. There is a standard quality out there and if you want your song to be listened to, you must conform to the standards. Mastering is a post – processing procedure, it is usually done after the laying down of tracks, after the editing and the mixing process. Mastering is the process of leveling out everything, compressing and laying down the final touches of the song. This is the process where you are setting the song into a uniform format and quality that is at par with international standards.

Mastering is a tedious process and should be done by professionals. Although you could possibly do it yourself, most of the time, it would not be as good as the ones done by a professional. Professional sound engineers use expensive high quality equipments for mastering alone. If you try and listen to international hit songs, they sound the same and they have this distinct clarity and feel. That is the reason why you should master your songs.

tonal quality

Posted by – October 12, 2010

Dealing with the sound and tone of the guitar was a thing that I was unaware of years ago. I thought it was all distortion and effects and stuff. However, after years of exposure with different musicians, I learned it is needed not only the distortion and effects that matters. The tonal quality of the different brands of guitars also matters a lot on the music that you are playing. Also, the brand of amplifier that you are using also matters. The effects processors and stomps as well as the microphone positions also matters a lot as well. All of this I learned after years of mingling with different musicians.

For example, if you are using a Gibson Les Paul on a Marshall JCM plus a Tube Screamer stomp pedal, the output of sound would be different when you would use a Fender Stratocaster on the same rig. Also, if you use a different amplifier, like a Fender Twin Reverb maybe, the sound would also change. That is why these things matters. The position of the microphone in front of the speaker also matters. It significantly changes the output tone of your guitar. So whenever you are playing the guitar, if you wanted a specific tone, check your equipments and learn them.

Crossing the lines of musical expression

Posted by – September 7, 2010

For so long now, musicians have been arguing to their fellow musicians about the importance of chops and feel on music. Is it important to have these great techniques and chops or is it much better to feel the music? Usually, there are artists and musicians that favor skills saying that to have the skill to do techniques is much more important than feeling the song. So if you want to know more about this subject matter, I have just the right information that could save you from the trouble of searching for it elsewhere on the World Wide Web since it is filled with much different unreliable information about this. So if were you, I would simply read this article and avoid the risks. And by the time you finish reading this article, you shall be enlightened.

Technique is part of guitar playing. Learning it is one way of mastering the guitar entirely. But if you don’t have the motion, and you just have all the techniques, it won’t mean anything. This emotion is what makes music as it is. If there is no emotion in music, it ain’t music at all, it’s just noise.

TIPS ON SOUND CHECK AND MONITORS

Posted by – August 4, 2010

There are so many sources that result in blurry sound. It is almost always an amplified instrument.  Most of the time these comes from guitar amplifiers.  Another reason is because guitar players always turn up their amplifiers after the first song because they find it hard to hear themselves as they begin to play those first few chords. One way to get rid of this problem is to give the guitar player more of his guitar sound on the monitor mix. This way, he won’t be always turning up his amplifier because the sound that he hears would be loud enough for him. This way, you would be able to get a clear and legible vocal sound over everything else. The reason is that the guitar and vocal frequencies operate within similar ranges, but volume onstage; you will have plenty of gain before feedback with your vocal channel at the front of house.

So if you wanted your performance to sound good on stage, follow these simple tips and you can be sure, you would have fewer problems.  Just remember that a well balanced mix is much more favorable.  It makes the whole sound of your performance clean and clear.

MASTERING THE GUITAR

Posted by – August 2, 2010

As a beginner, I understand that sometimes you ask yourself or your teacher how long does it take or how long will it takes for you to master the guitar?  How long will you practice or work it out until you get to a certain level of playing which is very far from mediocre?  Actually, that question is very difficult to answer.  There is no actual an exact single answer to that question.  The answer varies from different persons in it all depends on how much effort and time a person is exerting on practicing the guitar.  Most probably, it depends largely on the attitude of the person towards his practicing.  It also depends on how disciplined, determined and focus a person is.  Bottom line is; it differs from person to person.  Let’s face it, some people are really fast learners and these people have the tendency to learn quicker than people will have ordinary learning speed or whenever you want to call it.  And also, the more exposed you are to music the faster you will learn.  This is some varied a proven and obvious fact that a person who is exposed to music daily is more likely to learn our master the guitar faster than a person who seldom listens to music.

If you are a band and you are just starting out, it is very important that you know how to handle things like your gigs and promotion of your shows.  This is a very essential part of being in a band.  This could ensure you that there will be people showing up in your shows up.  Although it doesn’t matter how many people shows up in your show, it is always better to have lots supporters because that’s where you are going to build your fan base and it will be a lot of help for your band in the future.

HOW TO BECOME FAMOUS

Of course I am talking about band popularity.  When you are in a band, your main goal is to promote yourself and to become popular.  This is how it works.  The more popular band as the more sales, sold out concerts and fans they would have.  So if you want to know how to do it, I think I have something for you something very essential and important.

If you don’t have a manager in your all independent, the first thing that you have to do is to promote your performances yourselves.  There are lots of ways to promote it, especially nowadays when the Internet is very much accessible to everyone.  You won’t have a problem promoting it, you just have to have the right determination.  On the night of the show and people are showing up, make sure that you could hold their attention until your concert is finished and he could raise the energy levels so they will not think that you are boring.  It would also help if you would create an A set list.  A set list of your good songs put together.  It would also help to observe some of the established groups and how they perform and you should learn from it.

DIGITAL GUITAR RECORDING

Posted by – July 28, 2010

Technology has now made it possible for us to record your guitar playing me the same quality as some of those professional studios but with a price tag ¼ of its price.  Nowadays, you don’t need amplifiers, stomp boxes, and a microphone kits for you to be able to record a decent sounding guitar track.  Now, all you need is a decent guitar modeling software and home recording software and you’re ready to go.  Today I would tell you how to record your guitar using only your computer.  So if you want to learn, listen closely to what I’m going to say.

First, you need to acquire software called GUITAR RIG 3 for your amp modeling, stomp boxes and microphones setups.  For recording, mixing and mastering of your guitar tracks, I suggest using Adobe audition 3.0.  GUITAR RIG 3 gives you the option to choose from lots of amplifiers that are based on real amplifiers.  Also they give you the option to choose from stomp boxes, cabinets and microphones setups.  It is all that you need to get your guitar sounding authentic.  Now, record your track using the same software and transfer it later for addicting, mixing and mastering on Adobe audition 3.0.  That’s it!

RHYTHM AND LEAD

Posted by – July 26, 2010

The usual line – up of a 5 – piece band is the drummer, bassist, vocals, lead guitarist and the rhythm guitarist. Now, these two guitar players on the group are the melody makers. They should be synchronized and harmonious with one another. They should plan the notes and the chords and the effects used. Now let me give you some tips on dividing the chores between the two guitar players.
1. You could divide the EQ of the two guitars. One guitar should play low freq EQ ranges and the other mid / High EQ ranges.
2. One guitar should play purely rhythm, and the other pure leads and solos.
3. One guitar could play open chords and the other octave or barre chords only.
4. One could play clean rhythm; the other could do the distortion effects.
5. One could play the root note; the other can play the 5th or 7th note.
These are the usual division of chores of the two guitarists for a much more efficient and harmonious performance in a band. This is essential in performing to avoid chaos and discord. Even metal bands have accurate synchronicity when they perform so keep this in mind when you are in a band.

PSYCHEDELLIC

Posted by – July 23, 2010

Can you actually define what Psychedelic music is? What’s with this music? Well, if you have been listening to Jimi Hendrix lately then you have just experienced a dose of psychedelic.

In guitar world, psychedelic music is played with fuzzy guitars, delayed guitars and other guitar effects that could make it psychotic. The beetles had their touch of the Psychedelic genre too, in their album Rubber Soul up to the last; every song has a touch of psychedelic. This type of music has evolved in the late 70’s, when our mom and dad’s are currently not wearing any shoes and nature is the best thing.

Anyway, fads come and go but the music stays. Fashion is something that fades but the music, if it’s good enough, it would stay as long as it could. Have you ever noticed songs from the past that stayed up until now? That is because they are strong enough to withstand the test of time. That is real music indeed. If the music is just a fad, expect it to be gone after a year or so. Just like Justin Bieber, a few years from now, no one would ever bother looking at him because he is just a fad.

NOBODY LISTENS TO TECHNO

Posted by – July 22, 2010

Techno. Is it really music? Well, for most it’s just technological babble. I consider it music, personally, but I don’t like it. I have a different perception of music and noise. For me, there’s no such thing as noise, everything is music, but not all types of music, I favor. There are some music types that I prefer not to be played when I’m on the vicinity or area. And that music is techno, as in, pure techno garbage. I don’t like it. But I prefer it to be mixed with the regular serving of metal, hardcore and scream. Take attack attack! For instance. I like them. A perfect blend of techno and scream and MetalCore. Breakdowns and chugging guitar riffs and double basses mixed with techno synth and atmospheres, it creates a great offspring. Most music that suck, when mixed with other genres produce a great product. But that is not applicable to all types of genres. Not applicable to everything, some music just sucks for me. They just so good at sucking, horrible pieces of garbage.

With techno alone, it could make the world end instantly. And it promotes immorality. Don’t let anybody listen to techno. I urge you my friend.

DIGITAL DRUG?

Posted by – July 20, 2010

I have recently stumbled upon something interesting (and ridiculous) on the internet saying there’s a new drug circulating in the internet. The Digital Drugs. Mp3 music that could make you high just by listening to it. They call it iDosing. It involves listening to some crap through your headphones and screws up your head just like other drugs. They are even calling it the Digital Drug (this one made me Lol) and they are all over the internet, and we’re all going to be junkies.

Now, are these guys serious? First, Jenkems (fermented human waste) well, this is proof that people nowadays are so freaking bored with their lives that they would do anything to get high or something or do something else. Of all the things that we could do, why sniff human crap or why listen to this digital drug which I think is also loads of crap. It’s just weird tones playing on your headphones and these kids thought that it’s getting them high. These are all signs that you kids are psychologically imbalanced. And I would kick anyone in the face if I see someone do it. Seriously! You kids should get a life or do something productive.

IMPROVISATION

Posted by – July 16, 2010

It is the perfect way to show how much you have learned. It is the freestyle of guitar solos. It has no boundaries, except for the right notes that you should play along with but other than that, that’s it. Improvisation problems can be solved by constant practice and proper approach.

There are two possible ways of approaching improvisation:

  1. The vertical approach
    1. Play guitar solos according to the current chord.
    2. Horizontal approach
      1. Play the solos according to the current scale used.

One way to do a vertical approach is wrapping the chord. It means playing some notes of the chords and the neighboring chords. It demands quite a lot of knowledge about harmony and a bit of quick – thinking to execute well.

The horizontal approach however uses the scale that is used in the song. For this, you must have knowledge about the scales. Scales can be played in various ways like:

-          Intervals

  • 2 notes

-          Triads

  • 3 notes

-          Arpeggios

  • 4 notes

-          Pentatonic scales

  • 5 notes

-          Blues scales

  • 6 notes

-          Scales

  • 7 or 8 note patterns.

You can play the scales according to these patterns. Also, learning licks and listening to other popular guitar solos would also help you in improvisation.
